Outside Water Faucet

With the first sign of cold winter temperatures each outside water faucet should be protected from freezing. Modern sill faucets (sill cocks) have the washer valve located well inside the wall helping to prevent the water freezing and bursting the water pipe.

Older shut off valves need further attention.

The older style has the washer cutoff outside just under the handle. This style is exposed to winter temperatures and can easily burst from freezing.

Often, there will be a cutoff valve located in the basement or crawl space under the house. Shut this valve off each Fall and leave the outside valve open to drain.

The newer style valves also have an anti-siphon feature allowing water to be drained from the outside portion of the faucet thus preventing freeze bursting. Water hoses should be disconected from both style faucets for the winter season.
